Retake Policy

Examinees who do not pass a test, testlet or subtest may retake that test or subtest. If you wish to retake a test, testlet, or subtest you must complete the registration process again. Retake policies depend on the test you have taken, and are shown below.

Free Retakes

Candidates who take a test that does not follow the testlet model are eligible for a free retake if they:

  1. have taken the same ILTS test with the same test code twice after January 28, 2025;
    AND
  2. have not yet passed but have achieved a test-specific Qualifying Score Scale (see below) on at least one of those attempts.

Candidates who take a test that follows the testlet model are eligible for a free retake on their fourth and subsequent registrations if they have taken the same ILTS testlet with the same testlet code three times.

Please note the following:

  • Any test registration or administration prior to January 28, 2025, will not count toward a free retake.
  • You do not need to use a voucher or any special code; the system will automatically allow eligible candidates to reregister for free.
  • You may register for free up to 12 months after the release of your most recent score report for the test.
  • If you are absent from your test appointment, the absence will not count toward one of the attempts.
  • If you do not attempt to take the exam (i.e., no exam items are answered), the test session will not count toward one of the exam attempts.
  • If a candidate fails to agree to the nondisclosure agreement, their exam will end and they will need to contact Customer Service before they are able to submit a new registration for the same exam.
  • If a candidate is revoked from an exam due to misconduct, the candidate cannot retake an exam for 30 days and the attempt that was associated with the revocation does not count toward one of the attempts.
